When should my child start orthodontic treatment?

First and second graders….aren’t they fun? Bringing home 2 hours of homework that has to be done on dad’s lap top. A quick change into a soccer or baseball uniform so they can chase butterflies in the field while you sell Mike and Ike’s in a crowded concession stand? But hey, at least when you get home, late and sweaty and your precious little guy or gal gives you a snaggle-tooth smile, it reminds you to set your alarm to wake you up for your Alpine and Rafetto New Patient Complimentary Consultation in the morning! That’s right, not sure who was driving when that upper left central tooth decided to make an appearance, but let’s just say there’s no way that big guy is gonna fit in that tiny space his baby tooth friend left for him. Brace yourself guys…time to get real.

The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends your child be evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7. As a parent, this may come as a surprise; however, your child would benefit from a complimentary initial evaluation. Some orthodontic problems need interceptive treatment to either get a better result or avoid more invasive treatment later on. In these instances, interceptive treatment will save you time and money!!!!

A few of the things we screen for with INTERCEPTIVE TREATMENT are:

  • Irregular Facial/and or Jaw Growth
  • Proper Palatal Growth (thumb/finger sucking) (mouth breathing)
  • Crowding/Excess Spacing
  • Cross-Bite (upper teeth are on the inside of lower teeth) very important to fix this early
  • Severe Over-Bite
  • Moderate/Severe Protrusion
  • Under-Bite

Back to the need for an initial evaluation. This is to diagnose and treat developing problems, such as jaw growth or tooth eruption. Like the snaggle-tooth I mentioned above….From here the doctor may recommend early treatment.  This would be a Phase l, such as palate expander, a space maintainer or an appliance to help with jaw growth; or perhaps placing a few braces on the upper anterior teeth to help improve self esteem. Even if your child doesn’t need early orthodontic treatment, you and your child can meet our doctors and staff and become familiar with our offices in Pike Creek and Fairfax.  You will also gain peace of mind knowing that everything is being monitored properly, so the ideal treatment time for orthodontic correction is performed.
